Egypt steps up diplomacy to prevent Middle East "instability and chaos": ministry

CAIRO, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Egypt has stepped up diplomatic efforts amid concerns that mounting regional tensions could push the Middle East into instability and chaos, the foreign ministry said on Thursday.

Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held calls on Wednesday evening with counterparts from France, Oman and Iran, as well as U.S. presidential special envoy Steve Witkoff, the ministry said in a statement.

The discussions focused on rapidly evolving regional developments, including those in Gaza, Sudan and Iran, with Egypt urging de-escalation and restraint to prevent a wider slide into disorder.

The officials underscored the need to create conditions conducive to diplomacy and political settlements as a means of safeguarding regional security and stability, the statement added.
