South African Chad le Clos has been eliminated from the 100m butterfly at the Tokyo Olympics.

The 29-year-old, who finished 5th in the 200m butterfly earlier in the week, finished a disappointing 6th in his heat at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre on Thursday in a time of 51:89.

That wasn't enough to see him qualify for the semi-final, with only the 16 fastest swimmers from the heats making the cut.

Teenager Matthew Sates, meanwhile, finished 5th in his heat in a time of 52:34 and was also eliminated.

Le Clos is competing at his third Olympics and has been the face of South African swimming since he stunned Michael Phelps to win gold in the 200m butterfly at London 2012, while he also won silver in the 100m butterfly at those Games.

At Rio 2016, he won two silver medals in the 100m butterfly and 200m freestyle.
