Newly appointed Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos was on Monday welcomed by SAFA president Danny Jordaan as he landed in South Africa to prepare to lead the team in their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign.
The Belgian confirmed he had touched down at OR Tambo International Airport at 21:30 on Monday evening after being appointed as the 19th Bafana Bafana head coach on a five-year contract until 2026.
In his first interview with SABC Sport, Broos reiterated his drastic plan to rebuild the senior men's national team to one centered around youth.
The 69-year-old, during his unveiling, revealed that failing to qualify for next year's 2021 Afcon tournament in Cameroon presented the perfect time to rebuild what he called an ageing Bafana Bafana side.
"I was a little bit surprised when I saw the recent selections of the last few games that there were such a lot of players who were 30-years-old and older. I think we have to rebuild the team to a much younger team and where I can use the example of my previous experience at Cameroon, I did the same there."New Bafana Bafana head coach - Hugo Broos
Broos added that personal experience in the game motivated his decision, which he said would take time to show dividends with the upcoming World Cup qualifiers perhaps coming too soon.
"Even myself as a player, I can say that when I was above the age of 30 I lost a bit of that motivation and hunger which is less and you end up just being happy to be there with the national team," Broos added.
"Now with South Africa having not qualified for next year's Afcon tournament, this is the moment to build a new and younger team.
"This younger team may struggle to qualify for the World Cup but may be ready for the following Afcon."
Broos however, received a timely boost as the 2022 World Cup qualifiers were postponed by FIFA until September due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.
"Due to disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the African #WCQ due to be played in June 2021 have been postponed," FIFA confirmed.
"These 2022 #WorldCup qualifiers are now scheduled to take place in the existing windows of September, October and November 2021, and March 2022."
Broos will now be undertaking the task of setting up his technical team, to be confirmed on Tuesday, which will include one international assistant coach and a second local assistant.
