DAVAO DEL NORTE, Feb. 26 (PIA) - The Provincial Government of Davao del Norte has strengthened efforts to prevent contamination of African Swine Fever (ASF) by beefing up quarantine checkpoints from six to 28.

Increasing the number of quarantine checkpoints was among the concerns discussed during the recent "Panaghisgot Alang sa Kalamboan (Discussion for Progress)" round of local government visits in the municipalities of Braulio E. Dujali and Carmen led by Provincial Governor Edwin I. Jubahib.

Davao Region ASF infection was first noted in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental before cases were found in barangay Dominga in Calinan, Davao City, driving veterinary authorities of Davao del Norte to closely monitor the boundaries of Paquibato (Davao City) and Panabo City (Davao del Norte) which lie seven to 10 kilometers apart.

"Then naa pa gyo'y dalan nga deretso sa Calinan diha sa crossing Malativas (in Panabo) and Malabog (in Paquibato, Davao City) . So daghan ta'g gibantayan. From six checkpoints nahimo na karon nga twenty-eight province wide. (There is also a way straight to Calinan located at the crossing of Malativas (in Panabo) and Malabog (in Paquibato, Davao City). So we are guarding many places. From 6 checkpoints, we have increased these to 28 checkpoints province-wide)" said Dr. Renato Embate, Provincial Veterinary Office department head.

Dr. Embate assured the public that the local government units of Davao del Norte through its respective Municipal Agriculture Offices (MAGROs) together with PVO have intensified surveillance and monitoring activities and have immediately responded to reports of suspected ASF cases.

"Sa karon ang Davao del Norte is still green color zone, meaning African Swine Fever free," Dr. Embate said.

The Davao del Norte PVO calls for public cooperation in reporting suspected dead pigs which might have shown ASF symptoms. (Lifted from DavNor One Network News by Princes Nivea Berondo, UM Tagum/ PIA XI DavNor/jmda)
