German Luftwaffe loses two Eurofighers, 1 pilot, in mid-air collision

BERLIN, Germany - Two Eurofighter jets attached to the German Airforce were involved in a mid-air collision on Monday over the northern German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

One of the pilots was killed.

The freak collision occurred just before 2:00am local time over the Mueritz region, which is located about 100 kilometres north of Berlin.

Germany's Ministry of Defence has confirmed that one of the pilots has been located alive.

"In an aircraft accident, two Eurofighter fighters of the Tactical Air Force Squadron 73 "Steinhoff" crashed in the Rostock / Laage area after collision today," a statement from the German Air Force released on Monday said.

"Both pilots were able to operate the ejection seat."

On Tuesday it was confirmed the other pilot had not suvived. His body was found near the crash site of his plane. The wreckage of that plane was located about 10 kilometres from the crash scene of the other place.,

Germany's defence minister, Ursula von der Leyen visited the crash site and mourned with personnel of the Luftwaffe (Air Force) about the pilot's death.
