Argentina drops tax plan
Sudan News.Net Friday 18th July, 2008
Argentinian President Cristina Fernandez has dropped a plan to raise taxes on farm exports.
The policy had been one rejected in the Senate with support of her own party only one day earlier.
The increase was to affect mostly soya, the country's main export produce.
The plan was announced several months ago, sparking nationwide roadblocks and demonstrations.
President Fernandez claims farmers have benefited from rising food prices over the past few years and the extra tax revenues would have helped the poor.
