86 year old ex-Nazi charged

Sudan News.Net
Friday 18th July, 2008

German officials have charged an 89-year-old former Nazi officer with murder, over the killing of 14 civilians in Italy during World War II.

Josef Eduard Scheungraber will go on trial on September 15th in Munich.

Prosecutors are accusing Scheungraber, who was the commander of a mountain infantry battalion in Italy, of ordering his troops to kill civilians at Falzano di Cortona, near the Tuscan town of Arezzo, in June 1944.

The German troops allegedly shut 11 people in a farmhouse and blew up the building in reprisal for the killing of two German soldiers.

The current charges are based on documents and witness testimony, including that of a survivor of the massacre.

Scheungraber and another former German soldier have already been found guilty of the crimes by an Italian court, following a 2006 trial which was held without the men being present.

They were sentenced to life in prison in absentia, and ordered to pay compensation to the town of Cortona and to the families of the victims.

German judicial officials, in following up on the Italian verdict, have made their own investigations and are launching a separate case.

Scheungraber has denied the charges and said even though he was part of the army unit involved, knew nothing about the killings at the time and was not involved in them.

86 year old ex-Nazi charged

It is very strange that all of these war criminals, get uprehanded in their senior age, where they have already enjoyed their good life.

I believe this is one of the bigest joke of our times.

Yes, eventually all those war criminals will be brought to face justice, but it will not be in our life-time.
